Date-Topped Cake ingredients:

1 cup Dates, chopped
1 tsp. Soda
1 cup Boiling water
1 1/2 cup All-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/3 tsp. Salt
1 cup Sugar
1 Egg; beaten
1 tbsp. butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup Nuts; chopped
---DATE TOPPING---
1 cup Sugar
2/3 cup Boiling water
dsp Salt
1 cup Pitted dates; chopped
1/2 cup Nuts; chopped

Date-Topped Cake preparation:

1. Pit and cut up dates; add soda dissolved in boiling water and let stand In bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar; add to dates along with egg and butter.
2. Mix well; stir in nuts.
3. Turn into greased 80inch baking pan. Bake in 350~F oven for 55 minutes.
4. Topping: Combine sugar, boiling water, salt, pitted dates and nuts.
5. Pour over cake as soon as it comes from over.
6. Let cake cool in pan. Serve warm or cold, topped with whipped cream, if desired.
